The third evil is greed or hoarding of wealth, it can refer to a deep infatuation one can have for accumulating and counting their money. Slandering is also a grave sin for trying to defame a person’s character through falsehoods. It’s morally corrupt to speak ill of someone when they are not present and able to defend themselves.

This hadith affirms that even if what you mention is true it’s still considered backbiting. It was said to him: What is your opinion about this that if I actually find (that failing) in my brother which I made a mention of? He said: If (that failing) is actually found (in him) what you assert, you in fact backbit him, and if that is not in him it is a slander. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Backbiting implies your talking about your brother in a manner which he does not like.

In Sahih Muslim 2589, Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Do you know what is backbiting? They (the Companions) said: Allah and His Messenger know best. The three sins are, (i) backbiting, (ii) slandering/ridicule, and (iii) hoarding of wealth. The message of the Surah pertains to three grave sins that should be avoided and covers the nature of the punishment for those who fail to do so. It is generally agreed upon that Surah Humazah is an early Meccan surah. He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.”
